Almaty
Almaty – “the city of apples” – is the largest city in Kazakhstan having a population of about 2 000 000 people. The city is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan near the border with Kyrgyzstan in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau at an elevation of 700–900 m. Almaty is still the major commercial and cultural center of Kazakhstan, as well as its most populous and most cosmopolitan city. Today’s Almaty is the Kazakhstan’s largest metropolis, scientific and educational, cultural, historical, economic and financial, banking, and industrial center of the country. Moreover, the city is a world-renowned sports center. Almaty won the international recognition thanks to such prestigious events as Asian Games 2011, World Boxing Championships, a stage of world “Grand Prix-2013” in volleyball and professional cycling race “Tour of Almaty”.
